KENYA : Marauding Lions end Thunder’s unbeaten run in hard-fought duel

In Summary
  • Thunder, who still top the standings with 13 points despite dropping their first point, hit Lions 28-21 in the last quarter but failed to erase the huge deficit. Wafula scored game-high 23 points for Lions while Onyango added 16. Thunder scored 16 points through Patrick Odhiambo while guard Griffins Ligare replied with (11).
Lions ended Thunder’s unbeaten record in this year’s basketball Premier League when they beat them 80-73 in a closely contested first leg match at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
 After having won six straight first leg matches to maintain the top position on the 12-team table standings with 12 points, Thunder had a shaky start as Lions raced to a 27-15 first quarter lead.
  Coach Faustin Mgendi used the time-outs effectively and after injecting new ideas to his squad, Thunder turned the game upside down to go up (18-15) in the second quarter. Led by evergreen Tobias Onyango and the experienced shooter Ancette Wafula,
 Lions were still confortable following their huge first quarter run to remain up (42-33) at half-time. On resumption, both teams worked hard to utilize the minimal scoring chances which saw Lions escape again with a narrow (14-13) third quarter advantage.

In another match at the same venue, Strathmore University rocked Ulinzi Warriors 61-50 after leading 29-27 at the breather.
  The students were in top gear as they outwitted Ulinzi in all the three quarters except the fourth in which they tied 10-10.
  David Ogolla hit 13 for the winners while William Ochieng sunk 11 and Mike Tanui (12) for the soldiers. At Nyayo Stadium, Kenya Ports Authority women’s team started off well their tour of Nairobi by whitewashing hosts Kenya College of Accountancy-University 84-19.
 The unbeaten KPA from four outings, had nothing to worry them from start to lead 34-7 at half-time.
  Hellen Oketch, Everline Akoth and upcoming Debra Obunga coordinated well to score three-pointers at will for the dock women, who frustrated coach Charles Goro’s students, scoring 28 points against nothing in the third quarter.
Hard fighting Brenda Angeshi and Irene Murambi each shot (9) points while Hellen Oketch topped the scorers chart with 13.

In the men’s Division One match, Robert Mwangi fired 17 points as Trail Blazers beat Little Prince 65-59.
