UGANDA : Depleted Heaters target survival

By Charles Mutebi
EVEN though the 2013 National Basketball League season has just begun, it seems only fair to conclude that survival is the best the Victoria University Heaters and Vegetarian can hope for.
The Heaters open their season against Vegetarian (who lost their opening game to Nkumba) today at YMCA and all the signs point to one long battle against relegation for both sides.
Brian Wathum’s Heaters enjoyed their best ever season last year, reaching their maiden FUBA playoffs, but a nasty turn of events has left the side looking so condemned they asked for a postponement of their opening game because they could not raise a team.
The Heaters lost all but three of their players from last season and Wathum knows there is a tough road ahead although he promises to fight all the way.
“I can’t pretend that this is not going to be hard season,” admitted the coach.
“But at the same time it is a long season (and the club’s welfare could improve in due course). But in any case, we are going to give it our all as the Heaters always do.”
Passionate Heaters patron Denis Osikol relocated to the USA at the end of last year but insists everything will be done to secure the future of the team.
The present, however, looks bleak and it will be interesting to see how the Heaters fare against a Vegetarian side that only survived the drop last year.
The Luzira-based outfit know they will have to be better this year to do it again.
