UGANDA :Falcons torch Warriors, KCCA claw back
Warriors 65-81 Falcons (Falcons lead series 2-1)
UCU Lady Canons 62-67 KCCA Leopards (UCU lead series 2-1)
Steven Tumwesigye and Edwin Katerega scored 13 points and 12 points respectively off the bench to power Falcons to an 81-65 blow-out victory over Warriors in game 3 of the ANBL playoff finals on Sunday night at YMCA. Peter Elungat added team high 14 points as Falcons took a 2-1 lead in the best of seven series.
After a first quarter in which Falcons couldn’t stop anything Warriors did, Falcons started to recapture their defensive and physical play. Warriors (1-2) had an explosive opening quarter but down the stretch, Falcons (2-1) played solid defense limiting their opponents to 36 points in the next three quarters. Falcons played a nearly consistent offense throughout the game scoring 20, 17, 20 and 24 points in the four periods respectively. Leading by just 3 points going into the final quarter, the Falcons’ bench took over in the last 10 minutes led by Tumwesigye who scored 11 points in the frame and with 4:30 to the final horn the most successful club in the local game was into double digit lead and never looked back.
Norman Blick scored game high 18 points for Warriors and Sirus Kiviri added 15points and Sam Gombya had 8. Warriors were edged on the boards 41-36 but their inability to shoot from the foul line and 3-point line surely didn’t help. Warriors shot a mere 44% (11-of-25) from free throw line and 21.4% (6-of-28) from long range. The 2009 champions played the game with lose hands committing 30 turnovers, 11 coming off Norman’s hands.
Meanwhile, Flavia Oketcho overcame a poor start to the series with a game high 17 points and handed out 5 assists to lead KCCA Leopards to a 67-62 win over UCU Lady Canons in game 3 of the women’s finals. Sarah Nassuna and Joyce Zalwango added 13 point a piece each for Leopards (1-2). “Today we maximized our chances on the offense. We missed a lot of shots and free throws in the previous games but today we got them” KCCA’s coach, Timothy Odeke said. Moreen Amoding Scored co-game high 17 points for Lady Canons (2-1). Purity Adhiambo and Peace Proscovia logged double-doubles of 14 points & 15 rebounds and 14 points & 17 rebounds for Lady Canons respectively.
