Uganda: Falcons Question NCS, MTN Contract

THE long awaited basketball hoops are in town awaiting clearance at URA according to National Council of Sports (NCS) general secretary of Jasper Aligawesa.
Aligawesa said the world class hoops from Belgium have been procured by NCS to suit the specifications of the floor of the newly refurbished Lugogo Indoor Stadium (MTN Arena) and could be in use by the start of the national basketball league playoff semifinals.
But the NCS boss is angry with the basketball fraternity after Falcons Basketball Club Ltd petitioned against NCS and MTN Uganda Ltd for entering a refurbishment contract for the indoor stadium without going through the Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets Authority (PPDAA).
Dennis Mbidde is chairman for Falcons.
Through their lawyers, Web Advocates and Solicitors, the complainants forwarded the petition dated October 1, 2012 to the PPDPAA calling for the annulment of the refurbishment contract of January 22, 2009 whose cost was over sh1bn, and institute a com¬mission of inquiry into the project.
"We received the petition and our lawyers will react accordingly. But I am perturbed why the complainant didn't go to courts of law. On the other hand we think the agitated group is not for sports but selfish interests to divert sponsors. No sponsor in the world can donate through bidding. We shall investigate their motive of disrupting Government's call of the corporate to sponsor sports," Aligawesa explained.
