NAMIBIA : German Project Upgrades Namibian Basketball

NAMIBIAN basketball has taken another step forward following a two-week visit by German coach Peter Schey.
Schey, who was sent to Namibia by the German Federal Foreign Office and the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), conducted various training sessions in the Oshikoto and Oshana regions.
Schey trained 60 coaches, teachers and ageing players with an interest in coaching youth basketball.
The main topics were offensive skills and drills as well as the introduction of the new International Basketball Federation (FIBA) 3x3 competition, which is very suitable for Namibian conditions.
It was Schey’s second visit to Namibia after another successful short-term project in November 2010 in the same regions.
These short-term projects take place in addition to the long-term project carried out by German expert Frank Albin.
The long-term project focuses more on primary school level, while the short-term projects target secondary schools.
The project included a donation of equipment worth around N$40 000, consisting of balls, hoops, whistles, and game clocks.
The donation was handed over by André Scholz of the German embassy to acting NBF president Andrew Masongo on Friday.
“I hope they keep up the good work and continue involving and developing more young players. I saw a lot of talent here in Namibia and now it is up to the teachers and coaches to teach the young players the fundamentals of the game,” Schey said. The teacher and former first league basketball player returned to Germany on Saturday.
