UGANDA : Warriors on a roll
Warriors recovered from another slow start to defeat Miracle Eagles 63-54 in the Airtel National Basketball League at YMCA court on Sunday. Norman Blick and Cyrus Kiviiri scored a game-high 17 points, the latter adding five rebounds, to keep the form book.
That was their 18th victory in 19 games despite scoring only eight points in the first period as the 2009 champions struggled for rhythm. The gap was created by the percentages on the foul line. Eagles went 3 for 20 whereas Warriors were 20 for 39. Mohammed Yusuf’s 13 points and Ronald Bajunga’s 10 came a little too late to change the tide.
The result ensures that Mandy Juruni has now lost only two regular season games since taking charge of Warriors at the start of last season. This Friday, the losing finalists from the past two finals, face Falcons, whose intentions were further underlined by the return of Abdullahi Ramadhan.
The Tanzanian guard trained yesterday for the first time with Falcons, 17 wins in 19 games, hopeful of snatching top spot from Warriors. However, with Falcons still having to play KIU Titans and DMark Power over the next fortnight, there could be more twists in the tale.
KIU and Power are 14-5. To finish above Falcons, they must win all their remaining three games including beating the six-time champions.
