As the second best club during the regional ZONE 5 basketball competition held in Kampala, Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) women’s team, last year’s winners of the same tournament in Daresalaam, will join 2012 champions Eagle Wings in Ivory Coast later in October (19th -28th) for the 2012 edition of the FIBA African Club competition.
KPA lost to local rivals Eagle Wings in the finals but according to Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) official Joseph Amuoko, “Zone 5 has two slots for women teams at the FIBA African championships and KPA having reached the final will also get a chance to travel to Ivory Coast.”
KPA Coach Anthony Ojukwu says this is a good chance for his team to redeem themselves following a disappointing outing last year in Nigeria where they lost all their group matches.
“It was a good learning experience for us last year and we now know where to correct before we head to Ivory Coast.” Ojukwu said.
With the top two Kenyan clubs playing at the highest level of continental competition, Amuoko says it i a good opportunity to expose the players and improve the standards of the game locally.
