UGANDA : Poor starts for Warriors, UCU Canons

The old hoops that have been the centre of the storm surrounding the Lugogo MTN Arena didn’t damage the floor as feared.
However, as the Fiba Africa Zone V Club Championships started there on Monday, all the signs of wear and tear were evident.
One of the old hoops developed a crack as DMark Power practiced before the opener in which women’s side KCC Leopards beat Burundi’s Berco Stars 63-50.
That hoop was welded to create temporary comfort for the latter games. Ugandan sides Warriors and UCU Lady Canons could do with more than welding.
Both lost their openers, often the most pivotal games in pool stages of any tournament. Warriors were thrashed 72-56 by Rwanda’s Espoir and UCU went down 75-64 to Eagle Wings of Kenya.
The ladies’ champions can at least claim to have put up a gallant fight without their stars Purity Adhiambo and Brenda Mbone over eligibility issues. Lorraine Akinyi scored 23 points and 16 rebounds, Maureen Amoding added 23 and Peace Proscovia had six points and 16 rebounds to no avail. Wings’ Rose Ouma was the most impressive with 26 points and 13 rebounds. Before, Warriors played arguably their worst game in a while.
