UGANDA : Katamba resigns over Lugogo

Anthony Katamba has lived to his word and resigned as National Council of Sports (NCS) board chairman.
Katamba, who on two occasions stopped Fuba from holding basketball games at the refurbished MTN Arena, Lugogo, is unhappy that the Fiba Africa Zone 5 tournament is taking place at the stadium without his consent.
“I have been left with no option but to resign with immediate effect. I however use the opportunity to implore you and the remaining members of the Council to preserve this key public infrastructure by using it in accordance with best practice,” Katamba said in his resignation letter to sports minister Charles Bakkabulindi, a copy of which this newspaper has seen.
Katamba remains concerned playing at the surface with old hoops will damage the floor. He had asked that the tournament be postponed until early next month when new hoops will be available.

But a lengthy NCS meeting on Sunday ended with the tournament being cleared to go ahead. “For me it was a matter of principle,” Katamba said when contacted yesterday. He met Bakkabulindi on Monday and tendered his resignation yesterday. “It makes no difference. I have appointed John Onyik as acting chairman,” Bakkabulindi told Daily Monitor yesterday.
Daily Monitor has learnt that the minister appointed Onyik, hitherto an NCS board member, last week even before Katamba resigned. This seems to have angered Katamba the more.
“And it’s been portrayed as MTN being anti sports in this whole thing and that it is the one that stopped basketball from being played at the Arena,” Katamba noted. “No. It was me who did it as chairman of NCS primarily to protect the facility.
