Dar es Salaam. Dar es Salaam Basketball team breathed a sigh of relief yesterday after Chadema legislators John Mnyika (Ubungo) and Halima Mdee (Kawe) promised to help them secure financial support.
The cash-strapped Dar team is set to compete in the East and Central Africa Inter-city Championship scheduled for early next month in Kampala. The lawmakers came forward to lend a hand after the regional authorities reportedly turned a blind eye on the team’s request for financial support.
The vocal legislators also advised the Dar es Salaam regional basketball body (BD) to meet the deputy Dar es Salaam city director for more support.“The city has allocated funds for cultural groups where basketball is inclusive, so I call on BD to seek an audience with the deputy director, I am confident that he will help them out,” Mnyika said.
Mdee echoed Mnyika’s words adding that she would request the city council to consider allocating some funds for sports development in its budget. BD director Mohamedi Tajiri expressed gratitude to the duo’s efforts, adding that it would be a disgrace if Dar es Salaam fails to send the team to Kampala.
The teams expected in this year’s event will come from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi Comoro, Ethiopia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
