UGANDA : Wanitho leg-break compounds Power misery

Robert Wanitho broke his right leg trying to retrieve a high ball in the second quarter as Warriors cruised to an 80-61 blowout win to assume a 2-0 lead in the seven-match series on Sunday night.

He was rushed to Mulago Hospital and scans confirmed a compound fracture. It is the second time the 25-year old has broken his leg

As Wanitho spent yesterday in the theatre, his teammates came to YMCA court for evening practice feeling his pain but also with lots to ponder. The anticipated thriller between the two finalists from the past two years is proving to be monotonous unlike last year’s 4-3 series victory for Power. Warriors’ fans started to see the Holy Grail at the end of third quarter with their heroes leading 53-32.

“UCU was better,” they chanted endlessly in reference to Warriors’ 3-2 series win over the university side in the semifinals.
To stand the faintest chance of retaining the title, Power must win at least three games which looks highly unlikely. Stephen Okias scored 17 points, nine rebounds and six assists to give Warriors a fourth successive win over Power in as many games this season. The 2009 champions looked much better defensively than the 88-73 Game One victory while Power were anything but holding on. The two teams are heading in different directions.
Power shot 18 of 59 from the field, 6 of 27 from downtown and 7 of 18 from the foul line. The title is in Warriors’ hands ahead of Game Three tomorrow and a clean sweep is firmly on.
Last year, Power cruised into a 3-0 lead before Warriors hit back to force a decisive Game Seven. The rivals wouldn’t want to offer them the slightest escape route. “This is the pivotal game of the series,” Ronnie Kasewu said before Game Two.
“Let’s see but I don’t think they (Power) are as mentally tough as us.” Ivan Enabu scored 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Warriors.
