Newly promoted Gulu Hawks yesterday morning recorded one of the biggest upsets in Ugandan basketball, beating Kampala International University (KIU) 65-53 at the YMCA Courts in Wandegeya.

Having upset Miracle two weeks ago, Gulu Hawks now stand a better chance of remaining in the topflight, leaving Crane High School and KCC Lions as the relegation candidates. “We believed we could make it happen. We took the game to them and it worked,” Gulu Hawks player Larry Olum said.

KIU, who started the season with four consecutive victories, trailed Hawks from the first whistle and their late surge couldn’t overturn the result. Hawks got the better of KIU 18-16 in first quarter but the scores were level at 30-all by halftime. But a third quarter outstanding display saw the upcountry team scoring 18 points to KIU’s 10.

KIU then won the last session 17-13 but Gulu, playing without influential Denis Akena, snatched victory and moved to fifth place on the ten-team table with 10 points. Despite the loss, KIU remained top of the table with 13 points but have played a game more than their opponents.

“My boys just underestimated Gulu and were made to pay. We took things for granted in the beginning and woke up when it was too late to catch up,” KIU team coach Nimrod Kaboha told Daily Monitor. Moses Ochan, who joined Hawks from KIU at the beginning of this season, scored a game-high 21 points. Moses Olobo was KIU’s best scorer with 14 while Michael Karuiki added 11.

In other games played yesterday afternoon, Livingstone recovered from 10 points down to beat St. Michael 70-64 while Knight Riders remained the only unbeaten team in the Second Division after defeating Vegetarian 49-42.
