The Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations (Fuba) has called off tomorrow's MTN League games following the untimely death of Sadolin Power's Wilbrod Oketcho and Amazon Rhino point guard Najat Kultithier Kobusingye.
Tonight's games will go on as scheduled. Oketcho, the Most Valuable Player (MVP) as Power lifted the championship in 2000, died at Mulago Hospital on Wednesday evening while Kobusingye breathed her last Tuesday night at around 11p.m. when a motorbike (boda boda) she was riding on, was knocked by a speeding taxi in Kamwokya. She died of internal bleeding before reaching Mulago .
"It's a tough moment for the basketball fraternity. Oketcho was one of the pillars Sadolin Power was standing on as a club and we were confident he would recover and support them even without playing. And for Kul (Kobusingye), it just came as a shock," Fuba president Ambrose Tashobya told Daily Monitor yesterday.
Oketcho was on March 12 shot in the left thigh by robbers at his home in Kisasi, a Kampala suburb and was admitted at Mulago Hospital where he underwent an operation.
The departed star was steadily recovering until Wednesday when he developed breathing complications and was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit.
"Doctors told us he got a blood clot that made its way back to the lungs. The medical team was somehow slow in availing oxygen, they fidgeted around for some good minutes and that's how Wilbrod lost his life," Tashobya said.
Kobusingye's remains were buried yesterday in Mbarara. A requiem mass will be held this morning at Christ the King Church for Oketcho and burial takes place tomorrow in Tororo. He is survived by a wife and four-month-old daughter.
